There is a fire behind one of the windows at the station, so somebody has to go. The fire fighter climbs into the cab, the ladder swings up until it reaches the window, and the hose comes out. Then everything goes back where it started so the whole call can happen again on the way to the shops. It is the same rescue every time, which is exactly why it gets asked for every time.
Two arched windows that open, a fire engine with a ladder that swings on a rivet rather than coming away, a pocket in the cab for the fire fighter to ride in, and a hose on a cord. Cause and effect, a sequence with a beginning and an end, and the first proper piece of pretend play in the book.
